Wales: xx operating tracks, with racing to be phased out by xxx
Ireland: 15 operating tracks
New Zealand: 6 operating tracks, with racing to be phased out by 2026
Australia: 58 operating tracks.
While National surveys show that most Australians both oppose greyhound racing, many are still surprised by how deadly the industry really is.
Here are some of the facts:
- 28 greyhounds are injured every day racing in Australia.
- 3 dogs die every week racing on Australian tracks.
- 6 times more dogs are bred than the industry needs.
Why does greyhound racing still exist?
The Australian greyhound racing industry continues to operate with massive financial support and minimal regulation from the government, which is due to the revenue made from the gambling industry.
It is estimated that Australians bet $4 billion on greyhound racing each year, mostly done through gambling apps, without ever seeing a dog.
The gambling sector gives big political donations to the major Federal parties. A total of $2.7m was donated to the major parties in the last decade. Labor received $1.49m. The Liberals received $952,500. The Nationals recieved $263,300.
